More About Mako™

If you are considering partial knee or total hip joint replacement, Mako™ robotic-arm assisted surgery could be a less-invasive surgical option. Performed by our experienced orthopedic surgeons at Florida Hospital, the Mako™ procedure offers exceptional precision and is less invasive, which can get you back on your feet quicker.

Some benefits of the Mako™ Total Hip Replacement include:

  • Accurate placement of your hip implant using the surgeon-controlled robotic arm system, which can reduce the likelihood of hip dislocation
  • More consistency in leg length, potentially decreasing the need for a shoe lift
  • Decreased risk of the implant and bone abnormally rubbing together - this may improve the lifetime of the implant

Some benefits of the Mako™ Total Knee Replacement include:

  • More precise resurfacing of only the arthritic portion of the knee
  • Preservation of healthy knee tissue and bone
  • Facilitation of optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural feeling knee following surgery
  • Quicker recovery and a shorter hospital stay compared to traditional total knee replacement surgery

Common Symptoms of Chronic Joint Pain

Joint pain is often chronic, occurring more gradually as an “ache” and worsening as time goes by. Several diseases and conditions can lead to chronic hip and knee joint pain, but the most common cause is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that breaks down the soft cartilage, which acts as a cushion between bones and provides a smooth, gliding surface for the joint. As this cartilage degenerates, pain can begin and increase as osteoarthritis advances.

Some common symptoms of chronic joint pain include:

  • Discomfort while standing or walking short distances, climbing up or down stairs, or getting in and out of chairs
  • Start-up pain or stiffness when initiating activities from a sitting position
  • Stiffness after periods of rest
  • Poor sleep due to pain
  • Weakness or instability
  • Joint swelling

Some additional diseases/conditions that can cause chronic joint pain include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Paget’s disease

If you are experiencing symptoms or conditions, call the Florida Hospital Orthopedic Institute to learn about your treatment options.
